Reviewing Thesis of My Work Since 2017

There is no going-back in life. But there is always learnings to make.

Chatek LLC, Oct 2017 ~ 2019

After another unsuccessful attempt to build startup/company around my tech invension, I decided to run my own business, by signing up Chatek LLC (a China legal entity), Oct 22, 2017.

3 years onward, I found myself busy with multiple startup projects in a single year, 2019. That was when I felt for the first time my own problems in trying multi-tasking in building companies / products.

As a result, I achieved midiocre results from all of these projects. The failed Dr Turing (edu startup), the not-so-smooth China CEO of Wikifactory, an Internet-of-Production startup, the Github for manufacturing, and my own projects under Chatek LLC, such as a 3-in-1 code scanner project which failed to meet its projected growth and user adoption.

Here are my biggest learning from this period,

  1. Try not to work/focus on more than ONE un-related projects at the same time.
  2. If I work on multiple projects, make sure they perfectly complement each other, and make sure the non-primary projects have their own CEOs / leaders, who'd work with me to push everything forward.
  3. Never take full-time job / project, but instead, try to make revenue from existing/running projects I shall focus on.

This period of my career was full of trial and errors with myself being the sole leader of everything. My failture to generate meaningful resuts pushed away 2 young and capable CTOs who'd have trusted their partnership on me.

Reviewing my problematic thesis

  1. I thought that the global (China vs. the world) economic relations, and tech supply chains will continue to be what they're used to be. Not until 2019 and after, big shift happened.
  2. I ONCE thought of moving all my tech business out of China, but NOT determined enough to take effective actions to achieve that. As a tech leader, I've been blessed with many international talent networks, such as the Startup Grind, but I haven't leveraged them as well as I should have.
  3. I decoupled the financial aspects of blockchain tech, and boasted myself as 「链圈的人」, and I only cared about studying blockchain enabled applications, but this mental model led me to NO where. If I were a bit deeper into the framework of programmable money, I would have taken things more seriously and hence would have led me to more meaningful Web3 projects or partners back in 2018.

Consider one of the Multicoin Capital thesis,

The Web3 Vision

Whereas the open finance thesis is based on the idea of programmable money, the Web3 thesis is based on the vision of self-sovereign data. The Web3 vision empowers consumers to own their own data. This stands in stark contrast to the status quo, in which tech giants, banks, and credit bureaus control consumers' data. As this paradigm shifts, incumbents will lose their primary competitive advantage—their data monopolies—unlocking a massive wave of innovation and value creation.

When consumers own their own data, data monopolies will crumble. The second and third order effects of this will be profound, enabling the creation of new businesses and services that we can’t yet imagine.

You'd probably get it, mental models about the world and our own thesis should lead our action plans.

tikolyDAO, 2020 ~ present

Starting 2020, the big covid lockdown led me to re-inventing my own mental life, resulting in a more focused and self-aware living style, making big leaps in my own attention mastery, all thanks to my typewriters collecting and note-taking hobby I started in mid 2021.

I transition my company formation into purely attention and conversatioin bound human networks, hence, the formation of tikolyDAO, as the main vehicle to drive my work and business forward.

Although sometimes my the ADHD like behavior lingered along, I focus my daily output to my NO 1. super power, story telling, on tech and everything else. I keep this blog site, and I even managed to run my personal video channel.

My current thesis

  1. I'm most likey to build something meaningful by running tikolyDAO, by leveraging my No. 1 super power, story telling, to organize everything I've got and serving everyone I'm working with. I'm keeping the conversations with great people I met on the Breakpoints event series.

  2. Under promise, over deliver everything, for the startups I'm helping, the projects I'm doing, and the clients I'm serving, hence, the Breakpoints mission,

Conversations for analyzing challenges, fostering collaboration, and driving innovation in tech-driven businesses.

  1. Therefore, while running the Breakpoints, we're seving with tikolyDAO's mission with our global partners,

tikolyDAO designs and markets sustainable tech, Web3 and AI solutions with builders
